Wow! I cannot believe that after a year of going back and forth from the East coast to Colorado, I'm finally a Denver resident and Denver photographer!!!! I'm not sure how, but somehow I managed to haul all five animals (yes, five) across the country in my car. They absolutely love their new home and so do Martin and I!!!!
A huge portion of my time since moving into the new house has been devoted to decorating. I never, ever thought that I would be interested in choosing furniture and knick knacks for a home (yes, I am gay...no, we are not all Nate Berkus), but it's actually become quite an addiction!
The biggest focus for me has been to get my office done, as that's where I'll be conducting my in-person sales appointments with photography clients. It's almost finished, thank Bread.
This past week I met up with a couple of new dads here in Denver. I had photographed them after they responded to a model call on my Facebook page right before their baby girl was born. Between my move, the birth of their daughter and a trip with her to Europe (they are BRAVE), it's taken a while to align our schedules, but we finally did! They were SO excited to travel back into time and relive their excitement of becoming first time parents! And it gave my heart so much joy to hand deliver their memories! There is no feeling like knowing you are giving somebody something to treasure forever. Something that will literally outlive them, that their grandchildren will hold dear to their hearts once they've departed this world. That is why I do what I do.
It has been overwhelming...more than I anticipated...to build my client base from scratch in a new city. But I had a moment the other day where I walked into my office, pacing with anxiety about my business. I looked around the room, took a deep breath and smiled a genuine smile of gratitude. Gratitude towards my younger self for saying yes. Yes to an opportunity that seemed intimidating and crazy at the time.
I realized that every image on my office wall wouldn't exist if I hadn't taken a leap of faith and said yes to being a professional photographer, leaving behind my comfort zone of a career as a ballet dancer. The office, itself wouldn't exist without my imagination running wild while on a trip to London months ago, where I pulled much of my inspiration from. And the house the office is in wouldn't exist as my house if I hadn't said yes to taking a chance with getting to know Martin...and saying yes to uprooting my life and business to Denver. Life would have been so very, very different if I had resided in a place of fear and said "no".
Taking a risk can be scary. But you oftentimes won't know just how far you can soar until you take that first leap. I know that there are so many people that I can serve here. There are so many people who would treasure the heirloom boxes of photographs that I provide my clients with, who will marvel at the unique artwork I can create for the walls of their homes. Most importantly, there are too many Denver families who have waited far too long since their last professional photographs were taken. We truly owe it to the future generations that will love us one day to exist in photographs now. I know those people who resonate with that statement are out there and I know they are looking for a photographer just like me...
...we just have to find each other. And we will.
